23five

23five Incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. 23five was founded in 1993, and secured federal 501(c)(3) status in 1995.

We define sound works as: artistic endeavors that are primarily concerned with the use of sound, but fall outside of what is normally considered "music." This includes but is not limited to: recordings, radio transmissions, performances, installations, sound sculpture, site specific public art, and new media arts.

We aim to achieve these goals by: publishing and documenting the production of sound works by established artists and facilitating the production of works by emerging artists in this medium; becoming a development site for educational projects for artists, schools, community and cultural centers, alternative art spaces, museums, galleries, radio broadcasters, other media organizations, and any others interested in learning about the nature and history of sound art; serving as a think-tank, resource center and sound archive to promote an atmosphere where theoretical discourse may flourish; and providing the public with the opportunity to experience and review sound works and essays produced by artists and theorists. In seeking to meet our goal of collecting and distributing information and sound, 23five Incorporated continues to research and build international resources and contacts for public access through this website.

chop shop - oxide (cd)

Chop Shop is the moniker of New York based sound artist Scott Konzelmann, whose activities have comprised installations featuring his speaker construction assemblages and sonic compositions since 1987. Konzelmann’s sound and noise are intrinsically connected to his sculptural objects. Forged from repurposed junkyard fragments fitted with functional loudspeakers, these objects compress and...

jason kahn - vanishing point (cd)

Vanishing Point is a 47 minute composition, which Kahn has dedicated to his daughter who died shortly before Kahn began working on this piece in 2007. For all of the phenomenological studies and stoic mesmerism attributed to much of his catalogue, Vanishing Point is a subtle and hypnotic elegy for rattling metals, timbral vibration, gossamer static, hissing field recordings, and those...

tarab - take all the ships from the harbour and sail them straight to hell (cd)

The title to this album from Tarab is striking enough in its allusions of damnation, with a watery grave a potential outcome from human activity impacting the earth. So, it may be stating the obvious that the corroded locations where mankind has scarred the surface of the earth feature prominently in the work of this Melbourne based sound artist. The residual elements of these sites become the...

tim catlin - radio ghosts (cd)

Melbourne based Tim Catlin's Radio Ghosts showcases his unassuming expertise with the finer aspects of the mechanically prepared guitar. For all of its dynamic frequencies and crosshatched vibrations, Radio Ghosts is devoid of Marshall stacks, Sunn amps, and stomp boxes, as Catlin captures the acoustic phenomenon of the guitar’s transient vibrations and steers clear of any tricked out sonic...
