Lee Noble and Ensemble Economique are an odd pairing for a split, but considering both were responsible for two records I really loved last year (Noble's "Horrorism" and EE's "Crossing the Path, By Torchlight"), I am happy that it exists. Noble ramps up his fractured, atmospheric folk wanderings to a new level of bleakness here. Vocals emerge from layer-upon-layer of murk, seeping into the undergrowth to infect everything else that is churning below. Minor-key melodies hover beneath sonic grey skies, ensuring that everything, in the end, is stripped down to its base. At times it's almost impossible to tell what, exactly, is going on and in that lies one of Noble's greatest strengths as a songwriter. It's not really important where this music is coming from, but that it digs in straight to the bone. Brian Pyle's Ensemble Economique continues the forward momentum achieved on the aforementioned "Cross the Path, By Torchlight" LP, brewing tribal-infused rhythms as the foundation for slowly evolving downer synth drones and cryptic spoken word. "Your Hands, Your Lips, Your Eyes, Your Hips" is a neon-laced love letter. It's fatalistic and emotionally powerful. In comparison, side-closer "Radiate Through Me" is positively ecstatic. letting out all the tension built up in the former and tying up all the loose ends. The composers of two magnificent albums in 2011, Lee Noble (Horrorism) and Brian Pyle, aka Ensemble Economique (Crossing The Pass By Torchlight), have agreed to join forces for a superb ambient/drone/pop collaboration. The project goes beyond allocating one side of microgroove per artist, theming itself as a whole around Brian's poem and Lee's visuals. The result of these two Californian artists' harmonious fusion will overwhelm listeners with auditory emotion.
