Plankton Wat is the solo moniker of Eternal Tapestry's Dewey Mahood and after a slew of tapes and LPs for a bunch of different labels, he brings his sorcery to Thrill Jockey for his biggest release yet. "Spirits" takes all that is familiar about Plankton Wat and dials it up a few notches. Mahood has always been a bit of a chameleon that can change course from one song to the next and do so believably. His albums are always expertly put together - the sequencing & flow are top notch and each song feels like a piece of a greater whole. This is certainly true on "Spirits." It is an album that has a rawness to it; it is a visceral listening experience. The mix of handdrums and electronic beats on the smoked-out stormer of a title track is the perfect encapsulation of the entire record. The beat is almost pummeling and as Mahood wails on his guitar, it's like being pulled apart at the seams. There's also more whimsical and meditative tracks like "Portland & Western Cross" or "Cape Meares" that add a certain, hopeful magic. Comparisons to Sandy Bull and Brian Eno are not wide of the mark. "Spirits" is definitely Mahood's vision fully-realized. It's one hell of a record. - Brad Rose, Experimedia

Plankton Wat is the solo guise of Dewey Mahood, known for his work in Eternal Tapestry, Garden Sound (w/ Barn Owl), Edibles, Bloodbiker, and Jackie-O Motherfucker. Spirits is Plankton Wat's debut multi-format release, following an LP release on DNT and many sold out cassettes and CDrs on imprints such as Sloow Tapes, Digitalis, Blackest Rainbow, Sweat Lodge Guru and Stunned. Plankton Wat brings together Mahood's many influences - kosmische drones, spiritual improvisation, burnt out psych, and sun baked folk.
