I was recently commissioned to collaborate with Brendan Landis, the man behind the Hey Exit project on developing an interesting package design for his new album Slow Names. It consists of a vellum poster inner package, cd, rice paper sleeves, and tear resistant prints hand sewn to the outer sleeve made from banana leaves. It really came out quite fantastic.

It’s been a while since the last Rough Guide instalment and what better way to return than with a selection of compositions from Arvo Part selected by the one and only Aaron Martin…

Arvo Part was born in Paide, Estonia, a small town near Tallinn, the country’s capital, on 11 September 1935. In 1944, Estonia saw the occupation of the Soviet Union, which would last for over 50 years, and would have a profound effect on his life and music.

His musical studies began in 1954 at the Tallinn Music Secondary School, interrupted less than a year later while he fulfilled his National Service obligation as oboist and side-drummer in an army band. He returned to Middle School for a year before joining the Tallinn Conservatory in 1957, where his composition teacher was Professor Heino Eller. Pärt started work as a recording engineer with Estonian Radio, wrote music for the stage and received numerous commissions for film scores so that, by the time he graduated from the Conservatory in 1963, he could already be considered a professional composer. A year before leaving, he won first prize in the All-Union Young Composers’ Competition for a children’s cantata, Our Garden, and an oratorio, Stride of the World.

Living in the old Soviet Union, Pärt had little access to what was happening in contemporary Western music but, despite such isolation, the early 1960s in Estonia saw many new methods of composition being brought into use and Pärt was at the fore front. His Nekrolog was the first Estonian composition to employ serial technique. He continued with serialism through to the mid 60s in pieces such as the Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2 and Perpetuum Mobile, but ultimately tired of its rigours and moved on to experiment, in works such as Collage über BACH, with collage techniques.

Official judgement of Pärt’s music veered between extremes, with certain works being praised and others, like the Credo of 1968, being banned. This would prove to be the last of his collage pieces and after its composition, Pärt chose to enter the first of several periods of contemplative silence, also using the time to study French and Franco-Flemish choral music from the 14th to 16th centuries: Machaut, Ockeghem, Obrecht, Josquin. At the very beginning of the 1970s, he wrote a few transitional compositions in the spirit of early European polyphony, like his Symphony No. 3 from 1971.

Pärt turned again to self-imposed silence, but re-emerged in 1976 after a transformation so radical as to make his previous music almost unrecognisable as that of the same composer. The technique he invented, or discovered, and to which he has remained loyal, practically without exception, he calls “tintinnabuli” (from the Latin, little bells), which he describes thus: “I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me. I work with very few elements —with one voice, two voices. I build with primitive materials —with the triad, with one specific tonality. The three notes of a triad are like bells and that is why I call it tintinnabulation.” The basic guiding principle behind tintinnabulation of composing two simultaneous voices as one line —one voice moving stepwise from and to a central pitch, first up then down, and the other sounding the notes of the triad— made its first public appearance in the short piano piece, Für Alina.

Having found his voice, there was a subsequent rush of new works and three of the 1977 pieces —Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten and Tabula Rasa— are still amongst his most highly regarded. As Pärt’s music began to be performed in the west and he continued to struggle against Soviet officialdom, his frustration ultimately forced him, his wife Nora and their two sons, to emigrate in 1980. They never made it to their intended destination of Israel but, with the assistance of his publisher in the West, settled firstly in Vienna, where he took Austrian citizenship. One year later, with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange, he moved to West Berlin where he still lives.

Since leaving Estonia, Pärt has concentrated on setting religious texts, which have proved popular with choirs and ensembles around the world. Among his champions in the West have been Manfred Eicher’s ECM Records who released the first recordings of Pärt’s music outside the Soviet bloc, Paul Hillier’s Hilliard Ensemble who have premiered several of the vocal works and Neeme Järvi, a long time collaborator of Pärt who conducted the premiere of Credo in Tallinn in 1968 and has, as well as recording the tintinnabuli pieces, introduced Pärt’s earlier compositions through performances and recordings.

Pärt’s achievements were honoured in his 61st year by his election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was nominated as 14th International Composer for the year 2000 by the Royal Academy of Music in London. In May 2003, he also received the “Contemporary Music Award” at the Classical Brit Awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

11 September 2005 was the date of Arvo Pärt’s 70th birthday. As a homage to the composer, the Rakvere Arvo Pärt Festival 2005 took place in several Estonian towns.

Looking back 2010: As I prepare to start the next chapter in my personal explorations with sound, after a bit of a hiatus, I have been revisiting old material. The one I found most interesting was this album and have been listening and thinking back on it. Wanted to tell a little more about it. These are essentially my early dirty, dark, and rough, synth experiments. Recorded roughly between 1998-2000 (age 18-20). On various old synths and gear. Some my own. Some friends. Some roommates. Pre computer for me. I know there is Moog, FM7, Juno, and various other synths used in there. And tons of random pedal/fx chains etc. The only physical copies that were ever made were just a handful on CDr packaged in old floppy disc outer sleeves and handed out at The Peanut Gallery in Akron, OH… a gallery/performance space I helped manage summer of 2000… and where Experimedia was born. I am tempted to do a remaster and look into having a physical edition made…. as it feels quite relevant to me at this moment. I wonder would there be interest in a vinyl edition? It actually feels more relevant to me now than it did then. I understand from what some artists have told me that this album was very influential in their course to create ambient music. This was finally posted to internet archive and the Experimedia netlabel catalog in 2004. Since then it has been downloaded over 22,000 times. Which is quite a shockingly high number to me. Wonder who is listening out there? Anyhow. Thanks for listening.

Hiya folks….

First off… The Aaron Martin LPs will be ready late next week sometime and preorders will start shipping the following week. They seem to be going quite fast and I have some big orders from distributors for it so not sure how long it will stick around.

And another release of very unique work I am extremely thrilled about is in the pipes for release this fall.

Next weekend is the big move into our new house amidst the peace and quiet of the countryside, with much more space. Our little place we’re in now has become overrun with records and shipping supplies. So quite a task ahead but It will be great to get reorganized. Not sure if I will find time to do a newsletter next week or not so just keep an eye on the site. Shipping orders should go on as usual…. will do my best.

Its been a crazy year so far… but things should calm down so I can make some improvements after we get settled in the new place. I am already making an effort towards more consistent album previews using soundcloud as the engine. It is often challenging to get good audio samples… (and good albums covers for that matter)… I dont always receive promos…. preorders are obviously challenging… so I will include them where I can…. but I want to work towards making this more consistent… while integrating with the site nicely. I have some ideas for organizational retooling. The site… from my point of view… is still in its infancy… experimental stage… and I hope to make some big improvements over the next year. If you have any suggestions or feedback… anything you would like to see… please let me know. I have some pretty exciting ideas I want to work towards but don’t want to divulge too much about them yet. I may even get around to making an FAQ and fancy email newsletter one of these days. ;p

Experimedia presents the fourth full length solo album by Kansas-based Aaron Martin. A former collaborator of artists as diverse as Machinefabriek and Dawn Smithson (Sunn O))), Martin originally devised ‘Worried about the Fire’ as the soundtrack to a short film and the record sees him deconstructing preexisting snippets, sketches and samples from various collaborations and solo performances. All prior restrictions were set aside as Martin forwent his regular live-approach, untypically using electronic processing and effects and editing the parts without limiting himself in any way. Still built around his set-up of cello, banjo, harmonica and organ, there is an unsettling installation-character to the work, with distant echoes of acoustic instruments shining through the ghostly fabric of these twelve short pieces. Mastered by 12k label-head Taylor Deupree, ‘Worried about the Fire’ has however not only turned out a dark and demure work, but also one of brittle beauty – ranging from the meditative cymbal-space of ‘Ice melts’ and the broken-Piano semblance of ‘Blue Light’ to the consoling Ambient-Folk of ‘Making Rope’.

“Out-of-the-way, expansive locales seem to inspire the most fascinating instrumental artists, and this Topeka, KS based experimentalist is no exception. Martin’s fourth album, following 2009’s Chautauqua, was originally meant to be a film soundtrack. A whole batch of new Aaron Martin reviews have popped up I have not had a chance to post yet.
First off some airplay on the BBC. AIRPLAY ON BBC

New read below for reviews from Textura, Cyclic Defrost, Forest Gospel, and

TEXTURA

Don’t be too misled by the nature theme surrounding
this release. Yes, the cover depicts a wintry forest scene and, yes, the
press photos show Aaron Martin at the outdoors site and bowing
an upright banjo inside his Topeka, Kansas home. But he’s also a
sophisticated user of electronic production methods, something that
becomes clearly evident when he builds his core set-up of cello, banjo,
harmonica, and organ into chamber-like set-pieces that sound like
they’re being performed by a septet rather than a single individual.

Originally conceived to be a soundtrack to a
short film, Worried about the Fire, Martin’s fourth
full-length solo album following releases on Preservation, River Water,
and Chautauqua, finds him weaving bits and pieces culled from various
collaborations and solo performances into twelve succinct settings.
Apparently Martin favours a live approach but in this case uses
electronic means to build the material into ensemble-styled
arrangements. In “Open Knife,” for example, Martin creates the
impression of a strings-heavy chamber orchestra when his bowed cello
multiplies into a droning choir of see-sawing voices. In general, Worried
about the Fire could be described as a meditative
mini-drone-oriented collection that sees Martin using cello as the
material’s nucleus. One of the major things that distinguishes his music
from that of other producers is that, though electronic methods are
used, the overall sound is largely acoustic in nature. In “Water
Tongue,” bowed strings accumulate to form an entrancing drone-based
meditation, while the shuddering wail of strings and ghostly bowing
dominate “Beaver Falls” and the spectral folk-ambient “Making Rope out
of Eyelashes,” respectively. Strings, incidentally, aren’t the only
sounds heard: “Blue Light” pairs dusty piano and voice, and “Ice Melts
Onto Fingers” includes harmonica wheeze, glass tinkles, and glissandi
effects that resemble a porpoise’s call. By experimental music
standards, the tracks are short—only one exceeds four minutes—but that
is part of their appeal. Each makes a complete statement and does so
with admirable dispatch, and there’s obviously nothing extraneous about
the material. One could imagine the hazy drone “Marked in
Dust” stretching out for ten minutes but Martin opts to not only rein it
in but supplant it with a mini-typhoon of strings before it makes its
three-minute exit.

CYCLIC DEFROST

Originally conceived as the soundtrack for a short film, Worried
About The Fire has the hallmarks of atmospheric soundscape built
for psychological effect and immersion. Kansas-based Aaron Martin
forgoes live cello experimentation for an approach based around
deconstruction and electronic manipulation of fragments gleaned from
cello, banjo, harmonica and organ. This approach plays out in 12
sketches of electroacoustic sonic forms, or environments, or landscapes,
depending on how you envisage the space sound occupies. There is
definitely the sense of sketch as precursor, in the painterly sense, to
fuller fleshed out pieces.

‘Albee’ opens the album eliciting a form of electroacoustic flutter,
akin to industrial drone, before the introduction of melodic
entanglement and release. It builds an expectation soon undercut, in
following tracks, by acoustic collage, effect driven processing and
concentration on extended dramatic experimentation with the sonic
capacities of various acoustic instruments. ‘New Brighton’, constructs
an excellent tense atmosphere with contrasting bowing, spatial effects
with Tibetan bowl and the upper register electronic extension of the
sound into a sharp resonance for the mind. ‘Wires of Glass’ with its
antique vinyl hiss and loop, hum, and choral like drone induce what can
only be described as a reverent space. Or at least the sonic equivalent
of the perceived imagery forming such a construct, if it constitutes an
existent at all.

It is just this very dimensional foreboding, eliciting of hushed
sharp import that Aaaon Martin is quite skilled at achieving. No doubt
the addition of mastering by 12k label head Taylor Dupree adds to the
dense rewarding dimensionality of Worried About The Fire. The
quite stunning cover art is executed by Experimedia head Jeremy Bible
and it has on the inside a fold, hiding the digitally manipulated
landscape, to form a pattern in nature, almost an echo of a mandala.
However I leave it to you to delve inside this release to find for
yourself an interior open to a contemporary rendering of sound, through
fragments, construction and meditations on possibilities of form.

In the most recent Listed
feature from Dusted Magazine, Julianna Barwick said that she was pretty
sure that “13 Angels Standing Guard ‘Round the Side of Your Bed” by A
Silver Mt, Zion was “the most beautiful song [she’s] ever heard.” I have
a hard time disagreeing with statement because, one, it’s an opinion
based on her personal experience, and two, I pretty much agree. That is
provides an odd segue into this album review, I know, but Aaron Martin’s
latest album, Worried About the Fire, feels like a dozen pop
sized chamber burners of that same beautiful timber found in “13
Angels…” Martin’s work has always been a heavy favourite of mine. His
debut, Almond, sat just one tick short of making my end of
decade list. On this most recent full length, Worried About the Fire,
Martin doesn’t set out to do the same things that he accomplished with
his first albums, opting instead to rework his existing catalog of
recordings into twelve pop sized (2 to 4 minutes) musings on the pangs
of minor key gorgeousness. The results are compelling, displaying minute
gestures via cello layering, chamber orchestration and avante garde
texturing. While Worried About the Fire may not involve the 13
angels enlisted by A Silver Mt. Zion, it’s difficult not to imagine the
12 tracks on the album each standing in for a particularly angelic
seraph. Another beautiful outing, Worried About the Fire
confirms my opinion that Aaron Martin is perhaps the most compelling
post classical composer/musician working today.

Album art can convey a lot about the music included therein. Case in point: Aaron Martin’s latest effort Worried About the Fire. Scattered oak trees amidst falling snow, s
anding in silence, branches barren save for a few pink leaves, minimal motion as a light breeze passes; anxiety builds. There is beauty in it all, the stillness of things, the anticipation of something major. It is obviously very cold, so why are these t
ees worrying about a forest fire? Or is it a different kind of fear,
“And the trees are all kept equal

By hatchet, axe and saw”

Whatever it may be that’s scaring the leaves off them, Aaron Martin does an excellent job in portraying the emotions of fear, loneliness, and all around coldness. According to the man himself, this album was made for a short film titled Marked in Dust, and the album actually sounds like music made for film (and yes I’m fully aware that most albums covered by TSB could be described as soundtracks to different things). However, given that there is no information anywhere regarding the nature of said film, we could easily relate the music to the album art.

Minimalistic in nature, brimming with tense moments and heavy drones, with the cello at the heart of what’s going on, this is definitely Aaron Martin. This time he’s taken a slightly different route as the tracks are built around re/de-constructing older material rather than writing new stuff, and this new approach works very well, providing a fresher sound than that of his previous releases. There are even harmonica bits and drones, and even a pleasant piano line in the album closer “Sixth,” which are useful additions to his repertoire.

Loneliness is one of people’s biggest fears, along with the dark and killer rabbits (fact), and it is rated among the top five reasons for committing suicide. It is also a very hard feeling to capture, as it could be mistaken for lots of other unfortunate feelings one might have. Emptiness, isolation, and anxiety are very similar in nature but are entirely different emotions, making it quite an accomplishment for Martin to get at the true heart of loneliness.

However, the main problem with the album lies in the fact that it never offers any relief, hammering the audience with continuous sadness, making this the most apt release of the year to be given the “Kill Me Now” award. People generally relate easily to sadder music, that’s also why, in my opinion, many choose to veer away from the more miserable forms of music as a way to escape confronting the harsh reality of their average lives. One of this year’s top rated albums here at TSB, Daniel Bjaransson’s Processions also offers a very bleak view of things, but as Richard Allen stated in his review, “Processions is one musical millimeter away from being too avant-garde, too inaccessible, but the occasional clusters of major notes that comprise its main themes anchor it like a crampon to the ice.” Sadly this album lacks those occasional clusters and may seem a bit repetitive at points.

A couple of months ago I reviewed Martin’s previous release Grass Wounds and stated that his continuous output of music might be his biggest mistake, as he’ll lose the element of surprise to his releases. I’m glad he didn’t take any of that into account, because this sounds like a step forward, a new discovery in the way he does things which will undoubtedly reflect on his forthcoming releases. A little tweaking, a pinch of experimentation with different instruments and composition, and a touch of glee are probably the main elements that could be added in the future, but so far so good.

Aaron Martin is a musician from Kansas who has released three previous solo full-lengths in addition to a number of collaborative efforts with Machinefabriek. On Worried About The Fire, Martin constructs an intimate sound world using a variety of instruments including harmonica, organ, and bowed banjo. Martin’s previous albums have been live-to-tape affairs, but Worried About The Fire utilizes editing and sound processing to great effect, enhancing Martin’s personal vision and vesting the record with a great sense of place and personality.

Not unlike its beautiful cover art, which depicts a frozen forest blanketed in snow, Worried About The Fire can be cold on the surface, leading the listener to believe they are headed for one of those formless and faceless abstract electronic workouts of which there are far too many examples these days. As the record unfolds like a perfectly constructed experimental film, however — dripping with atmosphere, never tedious — Martin quickly allays such fears; indeed, he originally conceived it as a soundtrack to a short movie.

Beginning with warm, acoustic sounds — such as on standout track “Open Knife” — the record slowly transforms into a noisier, more processed affair, highlighted by the superb “Wires of Glass.” Worried About The Fire is one of the more compelling experimental records I’ve heard lately and invites favorable comparisons to the work of Richard Skelton, among others. Aaron Martin has crafted a distinct, meticulously crafted dispatch from the American underground. Worried About The Fire is an abstract record with heart.

The new label that Aaron Martin has his newest release on, presents his product in a different way, in a different format, almost like a library object, while calling their series ‘sound objects’. I love the idea of how a material thing has its sound, its life. Very different from the MP3 and other virtual worlds, I love a total concept, something touchable, sensible. Originally this album was devised as a soundtrack to a short film, for a part of the visual aspect in the music is also there. Built around the set-up of cello (Aaron Martin’s main instrument is the cello), banjo (hardly noticeable), harmonica and organ (also more hidden), but also live electronic processing and sound effects. I for instance also recognise some Tibetan bowls and some bowed singing saw effects, despite of few effects as if coming from the effect of electricity on some equipment (producing wonderful naturally evolving sounds), or a whirling turbine device on the first track), as well as loops and feedback or returning feedback like a second layer on the last few tracks. For a large part this is a convincing delicate sonic approach, with use of balancing overtones, or multi-layered organic movements of close-harmonic two-step rhythmical, but still melodic pulses, played by some cello overdubs and enriched with singing bowl or bowed singing saw effects. For the largest part this is like a creative discovering process of sonic explorations of which sounds work together well with a slow interaction. With a very close listen (but with a close listen only) only on the last tracks, the clarifying impression of improvising instantly itself becomes clearer than the perfect invention of a new space, as if creating a new environmental sound object. As a filmic experience this convinces as a explorative meditative piece. The best album I heard of A.M. so far.

City Center is the duo of Fred Thomas and Ryan Howard, members of the currently-shelved K Records band Saturday Looks Good To Me. Condensing Thomas’ intricate songwriting with processed samples and heady vocal effects, City Center focuses on the realms of bedroom lo-fi and ethereal pop. In an interview with The Deli, Thomas and Howard said City Center congealed in 2007, having “rose out of the time-honored scenario of living in New York and not being able to pay rent on a practice space, [thus] switching from traditional rock instrumentation to headphone-based/created music.” After several limited-run releases, including a gorgeous 7-inch split with Grouper, City Center released a self-titled full-length LP (TMT Review) on Type records last year. Thomas and Howard will play a few Midwest shows before kicking off their most extensive tour to date.

The cello is arguably the most diverse of stringed instruments, offering depth and moody basses to convey doom and foreboding sounds, while still maintaining the ability to transmit music of hope and immense beauty wrapped in a rich melancholy. Over the last year the experimental, modern classical scene has been treated with a healthy body of cellists with David Darling lending his talents to Dakota Suite’s “The End of Trying,” Hildur Gudnadottir releasing “Without Sinking” on Touch and Danny Norbury’s “Light In August” all some of the highlights. Returning in 2010 for his fourth solo album, Aaron Martin, the Australian born, Kansas based multi-instrumentalist, releases “Worried About The Fire,” an album certain to be noted in this year’s collective of cello recordings. Originally conceived as the soundtrack to a short film, the album is actually a deconstruction of previous solo and collaborative recordings, meshed together with electronic sounds and post production processing. It is an album that slowly lures you in. Starting with downright dark, hypnotic drones, “Albee” is an unnerving opening laced with subtle string sounds over a looping humming of noise. It’s a track that offers no clues as to what will follow, and indeed the set-up of harmonica, banjo, organ and bell sounds that feature on this album throughout bring an ambiguity to the overall sound. If Aaron Martin does have a trademark amongst his ongoing expansion of sound, it is with his layered, loop-based compositions. The first hint of this is on “Open Knife” a beautifully detailed cello composition showcasing the full range of delivery of the instrument. “Water Tongue” allures the listener, highlighting the depth of sound Martin evokes from his cello playing, with the warmth of his slow low notes juxtaposed with fast rhythms as his bow scatters over the higher ones. While these tracks perhaps define the Aaron Martin sound, and are indeed the most accessible to listen to, the album is rich with very dark, often unsettling music that never detract from the album’s overall composition. A standout track perhaps is “Beaver Falls” which builds slowly from a layering of strings and wind sounds to launch seamlessly into a cinematic scoping of cello. It conveys images of chases through forests (at least with me!), and exemplifies what this album is all about. Mastered by 12k label head Taylor Dupree, there is an intimate sound here, and often one can picture themselves being in the same room with Aaron Martin as he joins all his music together. Overall the crafting of each track is reflective of the album as a whole and just as Martin has been able to successfully layer a multitude of different instruments, “Worried About The Fire” stands as a meshing between darkness and light; proving chaos can exist in the most graceful surroundings. -By Josh Atkin

The cover of Aaron Martin’s fourth full-length album, Worried About the Fire, depicts a row of bare trees under an icy snowfall. The picture is a perfect indicator of the music within—chilly and eerie drones of bowed cello, harmonica, humming sounds, and samples altered beyond recognition quietly encircle one another in dark and beautiful miniatures that together create a dark and evocative work. Most of the pieces are built around a single droning note, from which other timbres slowly stretch to create beats of dissonance. As additional alien sounds enter the sonic palette—a note bowed over the bridge or fingerboard to create a natural sense of distortion with overtones, glissing harmonics chopped up and manipulated, canons of sawing strings—the listener becomes engulfed in a dark and textural world. All but one of the pieces clock in at less than 4 minutes, but each manages to suspend one’s perception of time so that every composition constitutes its own miniature journey. “Blue Light” floats electronics and breathing sounds moving between the speakers while strings sift weightlessly through a sea of reverb. In “Albee,” a sound reminiscent of a tiny helicopter circles dreamily around delay-heavy hits of a vibraphone-like instrument. “Water Tongue,” easily the least droning of the compositions, layers emotional folk-like cello melodies over a descending bassline, As high-string tremolos fade in and out with the quiet scratch of bows scraping against bridges, the piece delicately snowballs to a sustained moment of icy ecstasy. It’s no surprise that Worried About the Fire was originally conceived as a soundtrack to a short film. The music seems a perfect accompaniment to a ghostly snowfall or a sedate but disturbing dream sequence. These are experiences as much as they are pieces. While the album as a whole delicately builds to a number of climaxes—the relentlessly looped strings ¾ into “Marked In Dust,” the intensely building 8th note cello figures that close “Beaver Falls”—much of the music has a floating, aimless quality that makes for psychologically sonic textures more than narrative pieces. As abstract as much of Worried About the Fire is, the album makes for an engaging and beautiful listen that consumes you in its textural world. The fact that the pieces are similarly constructed results in a uniform listen where each composition floats into the next while at the same time standing uniquely alone. A score for a film that may or may not exist, Worried About the Fire makes for a deeply and evocative experience that conjures plenty of images of its own. -By Hannis Brown

Aaron Martin – Worried About The Fire
“By now it’s probably safe to stop introducing Aaron Martin with references to his prior collaborations with Machinefabriek and the like (oh darn, I’ve just done it anyway); he’s become a major player on the improvised electroacoustic scene in his own right, and Worried About The Fire is his fourth album. The cellist and all-round one-man soundscape devised this new collection of works as a score to a short film, and finds him shirking his usual live approach in favour of processed, electronically edited material. This doesn’t interfere with the language of Martin’s music (the cello, banjo, organ and harmonica constituent parts remain key) but it does give Martin the opportunity to work in a more composerly fashion than his usual style would dictate, stripping the music of its emphasis on realtime layering and the structural limitations that implies. The album begins in a tentative fashion, spinning a percussive drone through a phaser on ‘Albee’, before ‘Ice Melts Onto Fingers’ deconstructs the atmospherics with bells, cymbals and a kind of minimal harmonica fanfare. It’s only by ‘Open Knife’ that Martin’s recognisable musical idiom reveals itself, and from here on the string arrangements really start to flow, from the quiveringly melodic majesty of ‘Water Tongue’ to the suspenseful discord of ‘Reed Tunnel’, complete with bowed saw. The album’s twists and turns make for an always-compelling sequence, and Worried About The Fire is almost certainly Martin’s most in-depth and varied long-player to date; ‘Wires Of Glass’ finds him spinning through loops of vinyl crackle and choirs of meandering, wordless vocals, while elsewhere you encounter the likes of ‘Blue Light’, whose mysterious, dissolved plucks sound like a piano being played somewhere in the blurry distance. ‘Beaver Falls’ (presumably a place name rather than a prompter for aquatic mammal schadenfreude) proves to be exceptionally beautiful too, filling its three-minutes with slippery, multilayered high frequency glissandos that eventually cement into rhythmically urgent bowing figures. The recording is such that it sounds as if Martin started out the piece at the back of the room, before eventually making his way towards the mic for a dramatic finale. There’s much to absorb here, and Worried About The Fire makes a strong case for being Martin’s most assured and mature statement to date. The polish on the finished product is commendable too – Taylor Deupree handles the audio mastering while the opulent, oversized digipak ensures this is a finely dressed release to boot.” – Boomkat

Toen Aaron Martin op zijn zeventiende naar Topeka, in Kansas, verhuisde was dat ook het moment dat hij besloot om muziek te gaan studeren met als hoofdvak cello. Dat hij vervolgens zelf ging componeren was een logische stap. Hiervoor gebruikt hij naast de cello verder als klankbronnen o.a. ukelele, geluid makend speelgoed, melodica, banjo, glöckenspiel, piano en zijn stem. Met behulp van een loop pedaal legt hij vervolgens diverse melodielijnen laag op laag. Aaron Martin maakt op deze manier sferische muziek die je als ideale soundtracks zou kunnen zien. Het zijn composities die tussen soundscapes en folky ambient te plaatsen zijn. Een overeenkomst die hij deelt met muzikanten als Greg Haines en Ethan Rose.

Naast een samenwerking met Machinefabriek maakte hij drie volwaardige cd’s voor Preservation: in 2006 kwam ‘Almond’ uit, in 2008 volgde ‘River Water’, en eind 2009 ‘Chautauqua’. Albums vol stijlvolle melodieuze instrumentale stukken waarin zijn persoonlijke ervaringen en herinneringen een belangrijke rol spelen. Aaron Martin’s vierde cd ‘Worried about the Fire’ die bij Experimedia uitkomt, is de filmmuziek die hij maakte voor de film ‘Marked In Dust’.

Nest – Retold (Serein)

Norwegian duo Deaf Center (Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland) are responsible for some of the most compellingly gloomy of neo-classical productions, dense walls of ambient strings shifting like weeping fjords. Nest, the duo of Totland and Huw Roberts, explores similar concerns with a broader instrumental palette, and emotional range, coloured with shades of Jon Hassell’s Fourth World ethno-mysticism. Strings and horns augment sparse piano arrangements, resonating like an ECM recording, and Welsh harp, all draped in layers of processing.

In lighter moments, such as the opening ‘Lodge’, the piano dawdles like Harold Budd, with cinematic touches care of a Morricone-esque harmonica. ‘Kyoto’, not surprisingly, explores Eastern themes, diatonic piano dunked in aqueous effects, strings and plucked dulcimer recalling a Zhang Yimou film. ‘Cad Goddeau Revisited’ is weightier, velvety pads dripping in reverb, highlighting sharp Murcof-like dynamic cuts, while ‘Trans Siberian’ is defined by a sibilant, spacey drone over which glass is rattled and piano notes fall like snowflakes. The latter half is more claustrophobic, from the industrial gloom of ‘The Helwick’ to the hurdy-gurdy whine of ‘Far From Land’, but the final ‘Amroth’ is massive, vast treacly pads and rumbling static like Pop Ambient’s darkest moments. As strong as Nest’s arrangements are it’s the production that really stands out, refined to the point of exhaustion, revealing a clarity that is entirely contrived but always engaging.

Musette – Datum (p*dis/Inpartmaint)

If you’ve ever wandered around little Australian country towns, places like Berrima or Blackheath (to give two examples in close enough proximity to me to be able to hear), whose main function for existence at this moment in history is as sentimental shopping attractions to tourists, you will be aware of the familiar soundtrack(s). There is an almost even balance between those shops who pipe wallpaper new age-ness and those who utilise popular and easy-listening jazz from the inter-War (being the two World Wars of last century) period. I am surprised that no one (that I’ve heard of) has had the idea before of mixing the two rather divergent strands. What is even more surprising is that it can be done in a manner which just about manages to avoid the saccharine and triteness of each of the root forms and make for very listenable music itself.

Musette is Swedish artist Joel Daniel. The premise of Datum (from the Latin) is that each piece is a quick sonic depiction of specific dates where Daniel originally jotted down piano based ideas. Looking back on the collection, he recorded them, embellishing with violin, accordion, whistling and the like, as well as elements of field recordings. The simplicity of the collection is constantly engaging. It’s probably not exactly fair to call a lot of this music new age. While tracks like the opening ‘24 Maj’ and the later ‘14 April’ do mix washes of polite birdsong with plaintive guitar picking or piano strolling, the bulk rest more firmly on regular acoustic instrumentation. There are sometimes elements of Reichian jaggedness in places such as ‘18 Juli’, albeit with more attention to melody than pure minimalism. At other times (even within the same pieces) are grand pianistic scale flourishes. Satie-an melancholy is evoked in places such as the introduction to ‘3 Februari’ or ‘10 Juili’. Across the album, there is a sense of the music perhaps being the soundtrack to the lost sequel to Amelie, the frenchness evoked in both instrumentation and a lightness of touch. Sometimes, that sentimentalism mentioned above creeps in and the music stops engaging at these moments, receding to the dreaded background of niceness, but brevity aids in keeping this problem from invading too often. In contrast, sections of a piece such as ‘1 Juni’ with its bicycle bell and toy piano, generate a much more captivating sound field, even when interrupted by jaunty piano and accordion interludes.

Datum doesn’t quite shake off the aura of easy listening, but there are enough things happening to keep it enjoyable. And in Musette’s defense, he is not reaching for the grandiose or darkly introspective but is, rather, allowing prettiness to be a virtue unto itself.

Akira Kosemura – Polaroid Piano (Someone Good/Vitamin)

Polaroid photographs embody the hauntological; cloaking captured memories in a similar kind of glowing haze as that which surrounds real ones. Akira Kosemura’s evocatively titled Polaroid Piano is equally shot in soft focus (the cover too, adorned in Kosemura’s gorgeous Polaroid snapshots, reminding us of their charms) and is arguably the humblest contribution to the growing field of piano and electronics recordings. The pianist/producer keeps the soft pedal depressed throughout, as though afraid of waking a sleeping baby, although his pithy chord runs and gauzy arpeggios could calm the fiercest insomniac. Add to that harp-like guitar figures and a faint field recording din, hovering like warm fog, and you have one of the cosiest ambient releases I’ve heard in years.

There’s nothing remarkable to Kosemura’s technique – basically a stripped-back, slowed-down version of Goldmund a la Corduroy Road. His short sketches are more like hymns than anything classical, simple left hand chords with slowly unfurled treble patterns. Were it not for the feathery flotsam – the chiming guitar, ethereal ambience, and clunky sound of dampened keys – this could be George Winston. For all the ragtag homespun charm there’s a real sense of completion to these pieces, each element wedded perfectly to its surroundings, each track contributing to a coherent whole. Kosemura has created a real understated gem here, thirty minutes of blissful revery tinged, like memories, with the sadness of time lost.

Tom White – In Poor Visibility (Hibernate)

Tom White would have it that he is a guitar experimentalist. The range of his manipulations and the extent of diffusion of sound sources and concepts make this “identifying through sound device” slightly obsolete. As with a good deal of drone works, guitar manipulation, feedback, extension though device and software, holds a base for the musician. Often it seems to be dub’s revenge on guitar heads, warping the shoegazers into a sonic dystopia. Another entrance could be from the Tibetan bowl drone sphere, which takes the meditative stance of the aural as inducing brain states for contemplation. I would prefer to wrap White’s work up in the latter as a reference to the positive listening experience the album presents.

That is, if you consider your music in terms of aural painting and non-linear narratives, which is generally what the tracks present; a constructed scene of sound that reflects both the environment of the musician/listener and foregrounding the act of performance. The performance being a presentation of elements of sound and techniques welded into sonic displays of shimmer and static overplaying a background melancholy. Melancholy as an emotive state is often a signifier for the more contemplative and thought out, however the aural representation of this mind state is one that musicians of White’s calibre have a good grasp on.

A more descriptive approach to the album would echo the release notes describing it as “improvisations with dictaphone tape collage, mic feedback, fragments of guitar and found sounds”. Stylistic words to create interest would be: glitch, ambient, drone, bright melancholy, sonic sculpture. A note may be given that this is White’s first album after two EPs: its achievement in echoing the state of play in experimental music is more of a judgement call.

Experimedia presents the fourth full length solo album by Kansas-based Aaron Martin. A former collaborator of artists as diverse as Machinefabriek and Dawn Smithson (Sunn O))), Martin originally devised ‘Worried about the Fire’ as the soundtrack to a short film and the record sees him deconstructing preexisting snippets, sketches and samples from various collaborations and solo performances. All prior restrictions were set aside as Martin forwent his regular live-approach, untypically using electronic processing and effects and editing the parts without limiting himself in any way. Still built around his set-up of cello, banjo, harmonica and organ, there is an unsettling installation-character to the work, with distant echoes of acoustic instruments shining through the ghostly fabric of these twelve short pieces. Mastered by 12k label-head Taylor Deupree, ‘Worried about the Fire’ has however not only turned out a dark and demure work, but also one of brittle beauty – ranging from the meditative cymbal-space of ‘Ice melts’ and the broken-Piano semblance of ‘Blue Light’ to the consoling Ambient-Folk of ‘Making Rope’.

“If I call this disc “ingratiating”, I don’t intend the term with the slightest pejorative tinge. In fact, I was unable to dislodge this thing from my CD player for several days, it was that winning. At a gloss, it’s oddly retro, though its points of reference are scarcely more than a decade old: the ambient glitch music of people like Fennesz from the mid to late 90s. Fennesz is an unavoidable referent, I guess, though there’s more going on here than that, but Gomberg’s general palette is that of rich, ringing, creamy electronics spiced with small bits of noise shrapnel. There’s loose repetition, even the odd, pulsing rhythm. And it all sounds so goddamn good. Tracks like “Into”, with its snaky little groove, echoing clicks and vestige of a melody just worm their way in, impossible to resist. And “Solo” is positively deadly, sauntering in with perhaps a vague nod to the rhythms in “Are You Experienced?”, and tumbling through the room, all manner of detritus attached to its sides, heedless, a little boastful even, exiting in all its hilarious glory, jauntiness intact. “Comme” is the best potential crossover disc I’ve heard since Radian’s “rec.extern”. Its a bit expensive of course as with most Raster-Noton releases but we can expect top notch music and packaging. With the end of the decade (including the end of the 20% off sale), and the beginning of Experimedia’s 10 year anniversary just a few days away I wanted to take a moment to once again thank everyone who has supported or worked with me in anyway over the past ten years. The support I have received, especially over the past two years, has been inspiring and I want you all to know I plan to continue to work hard for the better of the community as a whole. Happy new years wishes to everyone and best of luck in all the you do in 2010!!!

As many of you are probably aware, the big project on my plate right now is expanding Experimedia into a distribution network in the North American territory. In an effort to build my connections with North American retailers I ask that you share with me the names and cities of independent music retailers and mailorders that you are aware of. My goal with the distribution efforts is to help our specific community grow and gain exposure on the shelves of more shops across North America. I will be working through a list of retailers, contacting them by email, phone, and snail-mail, making them aware of the titles I have available to them. There are many labels which are being overlooked or not properly represented by North American distributors. Having played various roles in our music community, viewing it from various angles, and as someone with a personal connection to this music I will be working towards going above and beyond the standard role of the average distributor. I plan to represent and promote the titles I distribute as if they were my very own (artist, and label). My long term ultimate vision for Experimedia is to see it grow into a global support and distribution network for the community…. recruiting other like minded and motivated individuals into the operations here in North America and overseas. A resource for labels and artists, with info sharing on distribution, artwork, package design, printing, manufacturing, radio, press, venues, etc. A network of labels, artists, services, that share their info and experiences into an informational resource. A way to keep the work and flow of money as close to the community as possible so that it may flourish as a whole. Keeping it in the family so to speak. The music community has been the only constant in my life for the past 16 years since I organized some of my first local events when I was 14. All of those people I connect deepest with and consider my friends have come from my involvement with the music community…. many who I have yet to meet….. so my work I do here truly is very personal to me…. and I do see and approach the community as family.

One of the many puzzle pieces towards these goals has been put in its place already. I have partnered with David Newman (know for his work as Autistici, and his label Audiobulb) who has recently started his own digital distribution services, AUDIOMOVES.COM . David’s Audiomoves is now the official digital distribution partner of Experimedia. Obviously David has a deep understanding and connection to the kind of music I deal with so this is an ideal partnership and keeps right with the goal of “keeping it in the family”. Basically this means not only will Audiomoves be handling the digital distribution of Experimedia titles but I will be connecting labels I work with directly, to David who will offer to advice and manage the distribution of labels titles into wide and growing range of stores including, iTunes, Napster, eMusic, Amazon, 24-7 Entertainment, 7Digital, Big Pond, Gracenote, Shockhound, Medianet, Myspace Music, Neurotic, Nokia, Omnifone, Puretracks, R2G, Rhapsody, Rogers Wireless, Secury Cast, Slacker, Sony Erickson, Spotify, Starzik, Telus, Verizon Wireless, Zune. While I know many of you are not fans of digital formats I do feel it is an important aspect in the landscape of music distribution. I see it as one of the many ways to turn music lovers, especially those from younger generations, onto the work coming from our community, perhaps turning them onto the joys of the physical package. //Two new releases on the absolutely exceptional Erased Tapes label. Cinematic inspired work at its finest. Both premium pressed records also include free download codes in them. I handmade a packaged DVD slideshow of family photos I captured over the last year for family as gifts and one of the Nils Frahm pieces worked as a perfect score. The combination of the photos and music actually brought tears to the eyes of a few including mine.

//I know many of you are fans of Kiln… known for his work with Infraction records. Twinewheel is an absolutely beautiful piece of work on 12inch vinyl on the Division Sound label. A beautiful pressing. Hand numbered and limited to 500 copies.

//Fjordne’s The Setting Sun album on the beautiful Singapore based label Kitchen had quite an impact on me this year. Truly a beautiful and unique sound the likes which I had never heard. Processed and arranged piano creates an effect not unlike a little music box. Perfect music to keep you warm during cold winter days. Exquisite packaging and design as well with nice front and back cover connected by an accordian style fold out of gorgeous imagery.

The latest issue of The Wire includes a very fine review of Shinobu Nemoto’s recent Improvisations #1 album on Experimedia.

“These five extended pieces for effects plus guitar were all recorded without overdubs in a single take, but they certainly do not sound improvised. Nemoto pushes his blurred, smoldering, post-shoegaze noise into simple but effective variations on a theme of the arcing crescendo. It seems that he’s capturing loops as he goes, and stacks the harmonically rich layers of distortion, E-bow drones, and throttled rumbles into incrementally dense constructs. At the height of each of each of his crescendos, Nemoto offers a restrained guitar solo, at times in impressionist form of a high-lonesome slide guitar. I am very proud and excited to announce that Ian Hawgood’s ‘Koen Park – Everything in Shadow’ album on Experimedia has been nominated by for the Qwartz 6 award for Best Album! Those of you that dont know Qwartz is the world’s most prestigious awards organization for experimental/electronic/new music based in Paris, France. http://www.qwartz.org/

Albums by 1089 artists from around the world were submitted and reviewed by a blind jury including Alejandro Jodrowsky, and Bernard Parmegiani. Out of the process only 7 albums were selected as nominees for the best album award and only 45 total in all categories.

Out of the 7 nominees Experimedia is the only US based label. And 1 of only 2 out of all 45 in all categories.

This is very exciting for Ian and I as we have been working closely assisting each other with our respective labels, and slowly but surely/carefully working on our collaborative project for about 2 years now and we have become very close friends.

The two of us will be in person for the first time at the awards ceremony in Paris. While there we will be attending the awards ceremony and have a booth at the new music exhibition. We also plan to plan some performances and recording sessions together around Europe. So get in touch if you would like to host something with us.

Most of the sounds that form Divisions of Space are part of the conversation that different percussive timbres (metal, plastic, wood) keep each other moving in constant motion the entire theme. The extreme manipulation of these elements transform the clean percussion in something diferent using chambers slowed in dark, unsettling drones and dramatic subwoofer effects. Shinobu Nemoto is one of the more colourful newcomers on Japan’s exciting Sound Art scene. His studio looks like a maquette of Stockhausen’s workplace in the 60s, a modularly convoluted wall of broken tape-recorders, cassette decks, various control units with secretive purposes, stomp boxes and plastic devices which look like Fisher-Price toys rather than musical instruments. He has recorded a 4CD-set of “elephant talk”, a massive zoo-sonic collection aimed at extreme bass-listening (“Turn on the power if you have a subwoofer, and do turn up the volume as high as possible. What will happen there?”, he naively asks on his webpage). And his discography includes a variety of pseudonyms and projects, including works by his experimental Punk-band Josef [K]. Just like the famous character of Kafka’s novel, Nemoto sometimes feels alienated from the world outside, but rather than withdrawing into gloom and darkness, he is using music and a philosophical outlook to create an inspiring, upbeat and colourful creative cosmos that is full of surprises: “I don’t plan anything”, he explains his process, “I don’t like pre-established harmony. It is boring.” And so, all pieces on “Improvisations #1″ (out now on Experimedia) may have been recorded with the same equipment, but they never once yield the same results. Noise, deep drones, Ambient bliss and even bluesy Guitar solos are combining into an intense listening trip of very physical qualities – even if you do not crank up the volume to the max.

Why would you like to live with monkeys sometimes?
(laughs) I’m human. And I sometimes despair of myself. With all likelihood, I hate human beings. The most important thing for an Orangutan is to learn how to survive in the forest. In that respect, we’re not all that different: Like everyone else, we are learning to survive. Little Orangutans and Chimpanzees, however, spend a lot of their time eating solid nuts and this was something that moved me. A human being, in comparison, is both great and stupid: If we do not create anything, we can’t live. And natural regression is impossible for us.

Are animals a source of inspiration for your music?
I wouldn’t say that my music is concerned with animals. I am simply very interested in them. When I am spending time with animals, I can feel how small my music really is. There are so many sounds around us that existed long before there was music. My question is: Why are we making music?

Your new album on Experimedia explicitely carries the word „improvisation“ in its title. Does that mean it was created differently from your previous works in any way?
A friend of mine prepared a show for me. But, it is usually difficult to play my work alone on stage. In cases like this one, I chose improvisation. I don’t drive a car. The devices which therefore can be used for the show are limited. Simply because I was planing to go to the venue by foot and by train. I took an electric guitar and some devices with me – my choice of equipment was restricted by what I can carry. So this album was created with a particular show in mind, but then that show didn’t happen. So, in the end, only the recordings were made.

All titles on „Improvisations #1“ were recorded during just five days. Was it an important aspect of the album to keep the pieces closely aligned in terms of mood?
MOOD! I hate that word!! But I would say that I am completely immersed in a particular sound while I am playing. Like a spur-mark on a sandy beach. That’s more important to me. Recording is something of a physical phenomenon for me. I am doing a part-time job of caring for an old man. That part-time job is an irregular service. Sometimes, I will be able to record in the daytime and then again at night, while, in theory, I could have recorded the album on one day. I used only a single setup for the entire album and the equipment I used for this album is simple. As I mentioned, it was important to be able to actually carry gear to the venue. Therefore I used small and light-weight equipments.

It sounds as though there are also some field recordings in there somewhere ...
This album was made only with a guitar and some stomp boxes. I didn’t use any other sounds. But I do like field recordings very much. It’s a great pleasure to hear you suspected them in the music.

Did you discard some material for the release or is everything you played documented on this album?
This album was temporarily released for free on my label MOUFU – ROKUON. You could actually call the current version a „fake“, because it is a little shorter than the actual performance. But an edit was required to put this album on one CD, something Experimedia thought important. But, I appreciate Experimedia greatly. Thank you JEREMY! (he’s referring to label-co-founder Jeremy Bible – tokafi) The question about documenting everything is important to me, however. The title of each tune shows the date when my improvisation was finished. The last lyric or just epic. AH! OH! That’s very important in my improvisations. This release is incomplete. And your question is very smart. It shows me that I must work more.

Ryo Nakata lives in Sapporo, a city revered for its beauty and the heavenly harmony of its parcs. His record company is called „Slow Flow“. His designs are music-made visual haikus, their imagery carefully crafted compositions of tender photography and pristine typography. His concerts come across as mass-like events erecting quietly majestic arches of serene tones and oceanic tranquility. His music suspends time in a bubble of stillness, creating moments of complete concentration and peace. When he tweets, Nakata reduces his messages to their bare essence, to short questions or precise comments, observations and quips. When he mails, he is a voice of utmost politeness, unfettered enthusiasm and sincere gratitude for showing interest in his work. Judging by his music and online-appearance, one would like to fold origami-figurines with this man, read poetry with him or take a long walk in the forrest, where red, yellow and brown leaves are shimmering in the auburn November-light. And yet, against the odds, there’s a side to his personality that few would have suspected.

This driven, perfectionist, inquisitive and outright hungry side has broken through in a passionate venesection of nine releases in just two years. It has manifested itself in an unexpected obsession for the kicks of coffee and an equally insistent, incessant and insatiable demand for „a lot of stimulation“. Within these two years, Nakata may have become known best for the simplicity of his Guitar-and-Laptop setup and the grace and elegance of his music. But he has expressed his preference for these elements with ambition as well as through a wide array of genres: Folk-oriented Electronica, minimalist Sound Art, dreamy PostRock and pure, undiluted Drones.

„Small Conversations“ now sees ryonkt returning to the latter’s warm embrace. Outwardly, it seems nothing more than an unobtrusive collection of four tracks in a classic Ambient-vein. There is the usual name-dropping in the press release, but it seems fully justified on this occasion: Parallels to the aesthetics of befriended act Celer can not be ignored. Comparisons with Eno are all but inevitable. Even references to the sustained tones and emotional acousmatics of Phil Niblock don’t seem out of place. These points of the stylistic compass are not strictly necessary to describe the music. But they are interesting for an entirely different reason. Just like the oeuvre of these famous kindred spirits, after all, „Small Conversations“ appears unimposing at first but grows almost imperceptibly with each listen.

Part of the allure of the record is how uniquely individual these pieces have turned out despite their astutely similar architecture: All deal with with drones and a layer of minutely placed tones. All contain nothing but a handful of elements and no more than one or two simultaneously running processes. All deal both with continuity and discreet changes. All could potentially go on forever, but are always, in fact, brought to an absolute (meaning: non-fade-out) ending. All are almost exactly nine minutes long, but work with a degree of temporal distortion, slowing time down to a slow flow in the early stages of a track and then, at the point of highest immersion, rather quickly pulling the plug, thereby creating the sensation of compact forms, personal journeys and intimate revelations. As a result, all compositions mutually rely on each other’s presence and one’s appetite is never fully satisfied until the very end, when the final fragile web of glistening harmonics and glockenspiel-harmonies has disappeared from sight. And only once it has died down completely can you feel the warm glow of inner silence following in the wake of an intense listening experience.

Despite its tightly woven carpet of ambiance, it is the subtle ruptures and surprising concretions on „Small Conversations“ that deepen its impact most. The descending-fourth leitmotif of „Aurora“, for example, can be understood as a sleepy pendant to the opening bars of Mahler’s first symphony, as the sound of the world dozing off instead of waking up. And the entire album hinges on the one track that stands out from the fold: „Synphony“, with its sweetly swaying and swaggering groove of swelling backwards-notes. Like a drunken brass orchestra skipping in a neverending loop, the music looses sense of physicality and rhythm, turning all texture instead. Single drone-streaks glisten on top of this construct like dewdrops on an autumn leaf, changing their pitch almost imperceptibly and without force. It is only after he has set his cosmos in motion that ryonkt dives into the stillness of stasis again and the power of quietude fully reveals itself.

Even though Nakata’s heart may be overflowing with passion, therefore, his techniques are those of a strict minimalist. He knows that it is not the tones one chooses to play that carve out a composer’s script most clearly, but those one chooses to leave out. And it is not how much you say that decides on the value of a piece of music but how much heartblood you invest into each single sentence, word and syllable. As such, these conversations may be small. But they are the kind you have with your best friend in an otherwhise empty cafe, when everyone has left the party and all that is left are the really important issues. With his latest full-length, Ryo Nakata may not have reinvented the wheel, but he has nurtured hope that there may perhaps be no need to either. Surrounding yourself with silence, harmony and beauty does not preclude the demand for a lot of stimulation, after all.

“ryonkt is the solo project of Japan’s Ryo Nakata, who also runs the estimable Slow Flow imprint. Like countryman Chihei Hatakeyama, Nakata’s work centers around impeccably treated passages of warm, crystalline tones culled from guitars. Small Conversations follows upon the simply wonderful Four Fragments EP, published by Smallfish earlier this year. Whereas that prior offering hinged upon concision, given the time constraints of the 3″ CD format, here Nakata is able to stretch out and let his languid drone clusters breathe. Like the best works of this type, there is an effortless clarity and ineffable rhythmic sensibility present in Nakata’s guitar drifts.

The opening piece, “Sora,” blossoms into radiance from a sea of swelling guitars whose attacks have been immaculately withheld. Nakata constructs a web of these effervescent tones which hang in the air like a fine mist, before dispersing and settling like drops of dew on a spring morning. All four of the pieces on Small Conversations function similarly and make for an absolutely lovely listen. Perhaps most delicate is “Toy Camera,” which positively shimmers with fluttering harmonics. On the penultimate track, “Aurora,” Nakata brings tiny, ringing bell sounds into a gorgeous wash of guitar drones. Great stuff, and another superb offering from Experimedia. “The five long, noisy drones on Improvisations #1 were recorded live, in one take onto a 4-track by Japanese artist Shinobu Nemoto using only electric guitar and ’stomp boxes’. The first response to these vast pieces is disbelief at their simple construction, as there’s a wealth of mysterious activity going on. Each piece moves gradually from whispered hum to grand squall, the towering feedback augmented with assorted clinks and blips, presumably from the stomp box. There’s a nod to Krautrock in the mystical shimmer, and the likes of Main and Flying Saucer Attack in basic construction, and an aesthetic akin to contemporaries Sunn O))), minus the metal posturing. For all the ruckus Improvisations #1 sits comfortably alongside Experimedia colleagues Billy Gomberg and Sylvie Walder, ambivalent sound poised between genial approachability and sinister malevolence. – Joshua Meggitt for Cyclic Defrost

Central to our free Creative Commons release of joe’s last mix is an invitation for composers of all backgrounds to remix the score of this innovative piece. We are hoping to receive remixes made electronically from performance recordings, as well as recompositions of the original work.

Composed remixes of the original score may be for any combination of the original instrumentation and require submission of both score and parts as PDF files, and must include an mp3 file of a midi performance of the score.

Electronic remixes should be submitted as mp3 files via email (for larger files, an FTP site is available upon request), along with a short written statement about your remix.

This is an ongoing invitation but participants who submit composed remixes by March 1, 2010 will be considered for a performance and recording by the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble on April 15, 2010. Winning electronic remixes will be featured on this concert as well. All selected submissions will be posted and featured on this site, the Loose Filter Project home page, and Tanner Menard’s web page.

All submissions and any questions should be directed to Stuart Sims here. Terms of remix agreement after the fold.

Terms of the remix agreement follow the Creative Commons 3.0 license applicable to the original work joe’s last mix. Specifically, you are free to recompose this work in any way you choose, using conventional notation for acoustic performers or electronic remixing techniques. All work derived from joe’s last mix must be attributed to Tanner Menard and must contain a reference to the original work. All scores and/or audio files must also be released under a Creative Commons 3.0 license and you must grant permission for us to release them on this site.

All scores created using material from joe’s last mix will be evaluated by a panel of experts including Stuart Sims, Tanner Menard, and Gary W. Hill. The winning score will be performed on April 15, 2010 by the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble. Again, for consideration for this performance, please send score and parts by March 1, 2010. Exceptional composed remixes received after this date will still be eligible for reading recordings by a high caliber university wind ensemble.

Billy Gomberg and Offthesky – Flyover Sound (Experimedia) review on Cyclic Defrost
“Flyover Sound is the product of Billy Gomberg and Offthesky (Jason Corder), kicking around pretty, minimalist sketches like a pair of hippie Machinefabrieks. Like the Dutch producer, Gomberg and Corder pay close attention to frequencies, and development, with highs, lows and mids all making measured appearances, only here elements seem to sprout carelessly, like weeds. Acoustic guitar, field recording and loosely tethered sine tones intermingle with glitches and processing to create organic, free-flowing pieces akin to 12kers like Seaworthy and Fonica, and if there’s little that’s wholly original ‘Flyover Sound’ is nonetheless an entirely pleasant listen. The album’s finest moments approach the kind of blissful revelry of Manual or Marsen Jules, almost Pop Ambient-worthy, but too carefree. ‘Wailing Walls’ has high-pitched sine tones flicker against the crinkle of closely miked paper, left to slowly distort and collapse. ‘Eyelids’ introduces warmer tones, buttery waves against which chiming guitar notes fold like a folksy Klimek. The title of ‘Radiator Peace’ hints at its origins, the hiss and crackle of household machinery deconstructed by granular synthesis, while ‘Untitled Diary Overdubs’ seems to conceal piano notes, appearing like spectres through thick night fog.” -Joshua Meggitt

Last year the fantastic e-zine textura.org named Experimedia one of its top ten labels of 2008. Also included in that list was another Ohio label Infraction! Ohio and ambient must go hand in hand! Also on that list were 12k • Hyperdub • Hypnos • Kning Disk • Miasmah • Schole • SPEKK • U-Cover … an honor to be singled out with such fantastic labels.
